Nearly 5 years down the track and Adventure Pants are well known for their comfort, durability and original style. They are best worn with a pinch of irreverence to fashion ‘rules’ and a splash of self-empowerment. Head Captain, Katy Robinson, reveals the challenges currently faced by her business and the brand new products which she hopes will take her brand to the next level.
What were you doing before you became a business owner?
I studied visual arts for a few years and majored in Printmaking, but found my way when I was introduced to screen printing. I then went into working as a screen printer for different businesses, mostly printing t-shirts and learning my craft at a more commercial production level! After a few years of this, I decided it was time to run my own show. We print everything in house and I now hire and pass on secrets I have learned to young aspiring printers!
Why did you enter into our GALA award program? What does GALA mean for you and your business?
I thought it was a good opportunity to gain some recognition from my industry and to shine the spotlight on my merino product. It is so beautiful and has many benefits for the wearer. It’s also great to support the local wool and manufacturing industry, which I am proud to be a part of. I think it is a good cross between art and apparel.
What is something new that visitors can expect to see from you next February?
Long sleeved tops in the merino will be new to the show, as well as a new range of prints. The concept with the tops is a thermal layer, but with a flattering neckline and print so it can be worn on its own. Also, we have a range of new ‘colour in your own’ leggings for kids that are new to Life Instyle! They come with a set of fabric markers in a cute printed calico bag.
How important is it for you to maintain authenticity and uniqueness when creating your designs?
What pieces are you most proud of and why?
I’d say the adventure pants are the core of my business and even though the timing of this seems to run alongside a huge leggings revival, I have a loyal following of fans who appreciate the thoughtfulness of the designs and quality of fabrics. I feel proud whenever someone tells me about the pairs they bought however long ago and how much they love them.
Can you give us a short run down on what a typical day in the life of Captain Robbo would be like?
Nothing typical in my day! I might be in the studio printing with my assistant, or travelling interstate for a design market, or glued to the computer answering emails and working on new deigns.
What are the key challenges you are currently facing within business?
Managing growth. Also, entering into tops is like a brave new world! So many different body types and concerns to consider.
In 5 years’ time where will we see you?
Possibly with my own retail store and a family.
What’s one thing on the Christmas list?
A bit of time off!
