Life Instyle is absolutely delighted to have the fabulous Julie Mathers, from Flora and Fauna as part of our Conversation Series. Before you see her in action at Life Instyle, we want you to take 5 minutes to get to know her a little better. So without further adieu, let’s meet this innovative pro, who is passionate about all things retail…

LIS: How did you get into this industry?

J: I have worked in retail for 24 years and it is in my blood. I love the customer and the journey they go on from discovery through to purchase. It’s far more than a transaction, it’s a relationship. I’ve worked across lots of different retailers large and small and have been in big corporates through to my current business which is small (in comparison) but filled with ideas and passion. Living simply and ethically and being kind to our planet and animals is very close to my heart so I’ve combined this with my love for retail and I’m pretty happy with the result so far.

LIS: What will be your biggest challenge this year?

J: Getting everything done that we want to do! We do have big plans and a clear strategy which is driven by our mission to change the way people shop. We just need to clone ourselves to get it all done. As with any business it’s making sure we do things in a scalable manner and making sure we can cope, and still deliver great service, with anything we do.

LIS: What’s the most unique aspect of what you do?

J: That would be our offer and our service. We are passionate about offering ethical products so our range is 100% vegan and cruelty-free and we are the largest beauty and lifestyle retailer in Aus (and possibly beyond) that is 100% Vegan and cruelty-free. Customers trust our judgment and that is very important to us and them. I believe we deliver exceptional service from the packaging and handwritten notes to going above and beyond to make sure a customer gets what they need which often is simply advice.

LIS: By the end of the year, what would you like your customers to be saying about your business?

J: Hopefully the same as they are saying now but just lots more people saying it. We want to be the trusted shop for vegan, cruelty free products but, more than that, we want customers to love us and feel that they are part of our business. We refer to our website as ‘Your website’ because it’s really important we deliver what customers want. We have great feedback from “I love what you do” to ” You guys rock” to ” You’re my favourite store”. More of that is great along with “wow you’re doing great things for our world”.

LIS: What gets you out of bed in the morning?

J: Along with my husband, 3 cats and Rosie the Pig (who is also our brand ambassador) my work. I absolutely love what I do and I am so honored to be able to say that. I am from the school of putting the hard yards in so I am not afraid of hard work or long hours and start-up/ small business life demands that. Luckily for me I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Finally, not on the questions but I wanted to include this, I am 40 and this is the first time in my life I have been truly happy doing what I am doing. Up to now I have enjoyed what I’ve done but there’s always been something missing. My journey to get here has been 22 years from when I started Uni. So don’t stress if you aren’t quite where you want to be; enjoy the journey in finding out where you want to go. Don’t rush to get there; it’s worth the wait.  Also, we’ve just (as of two days ago) launched our new website – a huge step change for us and many, many months in the making.
