As parents of children with asthma and chemical sensitivity, Annukka Organic Essentials was born as a necessary solution for Jeff and Nic Barwick. Placing a strong emphasis on intuitively connecting with the aura and rawness of their environment, the pair have created an organic clothing range striving to bring joy and purpose to its wearers. Nic shares more about what drives their passion and their keys to success.
How and why did the brand begin? Tell us a little bit about your background & journey in what led you to start Annukka Organic Essentials.
Fashion has always been a passion for me. As a teenager, I always designed and made a lot of my clothes. After getting married and moving to Byron Bay some 13 years ago, I began to become awash with the aura and rawness of the environment. Being situated in such an idyllic landscape, I began to develop a love for the benefits of an organic lifestyle. Upon having my two lovely boys, we were confronted with several health problems that were associated directly with chemical sensitivity. Such circumstances led me to develop Annukka out of part necessity and part sheer passion!
What product has been nominated for the GALA awards? Why do you think it was chosen?
We feel our ‘collective’ of organic cotton essentials is what we have been nominated for, rather than any one particular line. We feel we have been chosen for the fact we work tirelessly to bring a product to the marketplace that has aesthetic appeal, minimal carbon footprint and is functional and durable. Moreover, we produce our items in Australia, which does give us an immense amount of pride. It’s also a key ingredient to our success thus far. Simply, our online customers and retailers are thrilled that we can present this quality at such a competitive price point.
Any new and exciting products coming for 2016? Can we get a glimpse of what you’re working on?
AW16 is very exciting. We are introducing some new designs and some different fabrics, broadening our product range. We have increased the GSM of the cotton slightly for increased warmth. Our Southern State stockist will be overjoyed with this we think!
Where are your main customers located and what kind of retailers are they?
We are certainly blessed with retailers across all states in Australia and New Zealand. They do vary from stylized boutiques to boutique homewares stores with a select fashion presence.
How important is it for you to maintain authenticity and uniqueness when creating your designs?
Authenticity/uniqueness for us is of paramount importance as it’s a key aspect of our overall brand integrity profile. Without that, the notion of a successful business is not attainable.
What pieces from your collection are you most proud of and why?
I feel that all of the pieces have a unique story to me personally and install a huge sense of pride. Each have been on a different journey getting to this point in becoming part of the collection.
What do you consider the key strengths of your business?
Passion and drive! Jeff (my husband) and I, work tirelessly to improve all aspects of the business constantly. We do have a big service culture and will not compromise on that. Highest quality of our product, passion, drive & exceptional customer service!!
How would you describe your style?
Simplistic and functional.
