In Style: Jennifer Henderson, Love JK

If your heart skips a beat at the sight of cute bunting, if your pulse quickens a little for co-coordinating invitations and goodie bags, if your breath hitches for personalised prints and DIY softies, then you’re going fall hard for Love JK – stationery, partyware and gifts for especially little kiddos.

Jennifer Henderson is the founder and Chief Kiddo at Love JK, and her brand values are pretty terrific:

1. Deliver fabulous service
2. Be creative and fun
3. Be a big kiddo
4. Be lovely and kind (to everyone, including the earth)
5. Give back

We’re so excited to have Love JK exhibiting at Kids Instyle in Melbourne in August, we may just throw a little party of our own!

What path bought you to Kids Instyle?
All of my retailers said I HAD to exhibit. So I am really excited (and a wee bit nervous!) to be exhibiting for the first time.

A typical day at work involves…
On a good day, it begins early, with a workout or yoga at the gym, followed by a good latté to get my brain in working order. Once I get to the studio, I make my plan for the day, check emails, catch up on facebook and some favourite blogs. Then it’s time to get to work! My days are really varied ~ sometimes I’m in the studio all day, catching up on admin, chatting on the phone to retailers and suppliers and fulfilling orders. Others, I am driving around Melbourne visiting my retailers to drop off orders and catch up with how they are going, and having meetings. I head home somewhere between 6.30 and 7pm in time for dinner with my husband. As we both have our own businesses, we do more work after dinner. (Yes it’s an exciting household!!) I do my design work at night when I’m warm, cosy and relaxed. I often watch tele when I’m designing and I find this actually helps because it stops me from thinking too much about what I’m doing! I design best when I just do and don’t think.

My style is best described as…
Scandinavian, sweet, fun and a little bit Folksy

I live my Life Instyle by…
Being creative and curious.

Favourite piece of advice…
Life is what you make it.

If I wasn’t doing this I’d probably…
Still be working as a designer for other brands, dreaming of starting my own!

Brands I admire include…
Marimekko, Orla Kiely, Cath Kidston, Mozi, Lark.

My workspace is…
My studio in South Melbourne. It’s too small for all of my stock and equipment though so would love to find somewhere bigger (and warmer!).

I get my best business ideas by…
Taking some time out. Walking by the beach with my husband is where we often formulate new ideas. Thankfully I also have some great mentors who I can run these ideas past. They tell me if they are great business ideas or just crazy ones!

The biggest influence in my business life is…
My husband, my family and all of the wonderful little kiddos in my life who inspire me.

My dream business mentor would be…
Orla Kiely. Such a creative, clever woman who has built such a strong business, whilst maintaining creative control. Would love half an hour of her time!

Right now I’m working on…
New designs. I’m loving every second of putting pencil to paper.

My biggest goal for the next 12 months is…
To take the business to the next level. There are some exciting developments happening at Love JK!

In five years time I’ll…
Be designing, having fun creating new products and hopefully wrangling a little kiddo of my own.
