Meet Your Makers – Blacklist

In this edition of the Meet Your Makers series we catch up with the incredibly talented team behind Blacklist. This husband and wife duo come together to create these beautiful prints and graphics (which we’re sure you would’ve seen before) and we shine the spotlight on their stylish creations today. Producing original and innovative design-based products  including limited edition prints, cushions, throws, wall flags, towels and wall banners.

Give us five words to describe your brand:

By dreamers for dreamers

Tell us a bit about where the initial concept came about and what inspired you to begin?

Nathan had recently started Blacklist Studio and was approached by a magazine to create a print for their Valentine’s Day issue back in 2009 and from then the lifestyle side of Blacklist was born. The inspiration came from the fact that there was such a strong reaction and we realised no-one at the time was designing typographic based prints in Australia. People were wanting high quality, prolific designs, so we’ve kept creating and expanding the Blacklist brand.

How would you describe your creations?

They resonate with both male and female audiences, they are timeless, thoughtful, environmentally friendly, Australian made, limited edition interior goodness.

Let’s get technical. What materials do you use?

What are the techniques involved with creating these amazing pieces? Everything is designed in our Sydney-based studio and all products are made locally in Sydney. We use recycled paper, and a range of different artisan printers. We use linens, leather, paper, paper and more paper.

What can we expect to see at the upcoming Melbourne Life Instyle in your new range?

We have just released out first ‘Blacklist Kids’ which has been so popular, so will release another Blacklist Kid’s collection. We will also be releasing our new range of prints which will all come with a framing option, a ‘Classics Collection;’ and a new collab candle we have done with Palm Beach Collection and a few other surprises.

What does a typical day at work involve for you?

Lots of tea, laughs, emails, phone calls, designing, screen printing, organising, visits from friends, music and baby monitor madness.

Which other local artists, designers or creative people are you most inspired by at the moment?

We are inspired by anyone who works hard and goes after what they love. We are lucky to be surrounded by so many people who do this.

What’s next on the horizon for Blacklist ?

Who knows? We aren’t great planners, we tend to take things as they come, and figure things out along the way. We do know that we love what we do and that while we love it, we will keep doing it.

For good measure, what’s your signature drink?

Coffee for Jaynie and Green Tea for Nathan.

Any last words…
