Milligram’s first bricks-and-mortar store in Melbourne Central has won Gold in the Melbourne DrivenxDesign Award in the Interior Design — Retail category. Other nominations included The Hypnotic House, Hanes SIS — Berlei, Bonds, Jockey; and Hanes SIS — Maidenform.

“We wanted to create a shop that looked and felt different to any other store locally — unique, warm, inviting and the perfect home for the design-led stationery and life brands we house. We’re so proud to win this award and look forward to continuing to create more exciting retail spaces with clever design partners like Studio Y,” says Director and Co-Founder, Scott Druce.

The store was designed by award-winning Studio Y, who have exhibited a level of design not usually seen in stationery stores. The store has an impressive 8.6 metres frontage, an official LAMY shop-in-shop, interactive touch screens, a gift wrap station, a mesmerising ink swatch wall and roving iPads to accelerate the checkout process.

There are playful elements like the “pen hospital” and a customisation counter that create a focal point while pops of porcelain, fluted polycarbonate, warm timbers, rendered concrete and brass fittings add balance and bring the concept together.

Studio Y have used combinations of smooth and textured surfaces and simple, timeless shapes. The curved lines create flow and dynamic circulation, and the nude material palette acts as a backdrop to the products as well as opening up and brightening the space. The warm timbers are inviting, inclusive and aims to reflect both the modern
aesthetic and creative community focus of Milligram.
Since opening in November 2017, the store has been turning heads for its high-level design as well as the completely unique shopping experience that the online platform cannot provide. Customers can use the space in their own particular way, encouraging an enhanced experience and greater interaction with Milligram’s extensive, leading brands and
products.

Further to this, Milligram was also nominated for the 2018 Australian Interior Design Awards in the retail category.
