Scandinavia meets Bondi at Zakkia

Based in Sydney, Zakkia collections draw on its Swedish heritage and love of Scandinavian design. Founder, Sara Lundgren, highlights the important influence of her heritage in her designs, her love of fellow innovative Australian brands and much, much more!

What were you doing before you became a business owner?

I came to Australia from Sweden six years ago to study and enjoy the relaxed lifestyle. After completing my studies, I worked in corporate marketing and later joined my partner’s tech business, which turned out to be a big influence for launching Zakkia. After working with lots of small start-up clients, I was inspired to combine my love of design and entrepreneurship into a home and lifestyle brand.

Why did you enter into our GALA award program? What does GALA mean for you and your business?

We decided to enter the GALA program this year because it is a great way to showcase some of our favourite products and it is also an opportunity to connect with industry thought leaders to build awareness for Zakkia. At Zakkia we love celebrating individual style, so for us it’s equally exciting to see the other innovative designs submitted by Australian brands within the same categories as us.

What is something new that visitors can expect to see from you next February?

We are working on an exciting collaboration that will launch at the February show! This project is an extension of some of our existing core products and we can’t wait to share it soon.

How important is it for you to maintain authenticity and uniqueness when creating your designs?

Both of these factors are a big influence on our designs! Being Swedish, a lot of Zakkia’s shapes and colours show the authentic Scandinavian style, but since moving to Bondi, it feels natural to have a slightly more playful element to the designs as well. Having unique products is also important, particularly to provide something different for our stockists and their customers.

What pieces are you most proud of and why?

It’s hard to choose! The candles were a lot of fun to develop; everything from the scents to different wax types was a good learning experience. The Concrete Dala Horse is also a special one as it’s a famous Swedish icon that I grew up with.

Can you give us a short run down on what a typical day in the life of Zakkia would be like?

Each day is completely different! We might be designing products and evaluating samples in the morning or catching up with new partners, then the afternoon could be spent in front of a big spreadsheet.

In 5 years’ time where will we see you?

Hopefully in five years we will be creating a wider range of home and lifestyle products and possibly have a stronger presence in a couple of new markets.

What’s one thing on the Christmas list?

This year I would like to go somewhere new for Christmas and just enjoy a nice warm day outdoors!
