Snapchat Memories: What it means for your business

Snapchat Memories Hero

Recently Snapchat announced the introduction of Memories – a new feature in the video and image sharing app that allows you to save and store snaps for later and upload content from your phone. This a huge step for Snapchat. So what does it mean for you and your business?

What are Snapchat Memories?

Snapchat Memories allow you to save your snaps to the app and re-share them at a later date. The biggest change is that it also allows you to upload and share images and videos from your phone, outside of the app.

This completely changes the game for Snapchat which was previously known for quick videos and images captured on the go that disappear after 24 hours. Now, once shared, your snaps or stories will still disappear after 24 hours, however, the content you have to draw on is much broader and the snaps you save in Memories stay there for you to share and re-share whenever you like.

The idea is that it gives people and businesses an opportunity to curate and create more considered stories. If you want to celebrate a milestone or a birthday, you can create stories that span time, rather than only sharing moments in the now.

How to use Snapchat Memories

  1. To access Memories, swipe up from the camera screen in Snapchat
  2. You’ll have the option to save or import snaps to get started – you can then choose to import any saved snaps from your phone or upload images or videos from your camera roll
  3. Once you upload an image or video, it allows you to edit it like you would with any snap
  4. From here you can choose to send it to someone or add to your Snapchat Story
  5. When capturing snaps in the app, you can choose to share them as you normally would or save them to Memories to share later by clicking on the icon that shows an arrow pointing down in the bottom left corner of the screen
  6. You can also choose to add snaps to a special ‘My Eyes Only’ section for snaps that you don’t want others to see

Snapchat Memories How it Works

So what does this mean for your business on Snapchat?

It’s a huge step for Snapchat and shows how the business is growing and targeting new audiences. There are a few key things to note.

Memories means that the quality of videos and images shared on Snapchat will improve

Previously, one of the loved features of Snapchat was that you had to capture and share moments as they were happening. It was much less curated, less styled and social platform that felt ‘more real’ to many, which was an aspect many loved. Now, it’s likely we’ll see a lot of brands really stepping up and sharing beautiful video and imagery in crafted and considered stories. This function means you can also create engaging and inspiring Snapchat stories for your audience, however this could potentially take up a lot more time than it previously was. Play around with the new features and see how you can make it work for you and your business. Now’s the time to be jumping on board and getting to know the app during its growth phase.

You don’t lose your content

As a small business, whether you have a social media manager or find it’s you looking after your social, it can be a constant juggle of finding the time to focus on the things that matter. What Snapchat Memories does mean is that the time you spend creating content for Snapchat is not lost.

With the ability to save content and re-use it multiple times, you can batch up your content to save you time. And, being able to upload other content means you can use the content created for other platforms on Snapchat too, saving you time and effort. Just be sure to consider your audience on Snapchat and find a way to work existing content in with new content created specifically for Snapchat.

Have you been using Snapchat Memories? I’d love to know how you’re going with it. Tell me below!
