The Exuberant Julie White

Known for her instantly recognisable hand drawn prints, Julie White seeks to capture the mysterious heart and soul of the Australian environment through her bold, original and fun pieces. Life Instyle had the unique opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at this timeless world of scarves & specialty socks…

What is your company story?

I am the designer and founder of my eponymous art fashion accessories label. My signature collection of silk scarves and printed socks feature my own original art prints. My design signature is recognised as bold, fun and original. Building on the tradition of contemporary Australiana, I’m inspired by our native flora and fauna. Through my work I try to capture the mystery and excitement of the bush, the desert and the sea, with colour and style! My background is fashion design and I studied my Masters in textile print at the Glasgow School of Art. After finishing my degree in the UK, I came back to Australia to launch my accessories label and I am now based in Adelaide where I design my ongoing core accessories ranges in my studio.

Why do you exhibit at Life Instyle?

This is the first year I’ve showcased at Life In Style – debuting at First Instyle Melbourne 2015 and I loved it! There’s no other platform like this in Australia that allows you to meet new and existing stockists with the right fit for my unique products. I love the one-on-one chats I have with my lovely stockists and meeting many faces from the industry – stylists, bloggers, other designers – you never know who you just might bump into!

Do you have any new product ranges this year? What are you excited to launch for 2016?

As part of my ongoing core range of accessories I just released a new print series called ‘Straya Nights’. Straya Nights explores Australiana after dark, with silk scarves + socks inspired by Australia’s nocturnal wilderness. While this is brand new, I’m also looking forward to developing and releasing my next range at the next Melbourne Life Instyle in 2016.

What pieces are you most proud of and why?

My signature socks and scarf range. I’m proud of creating an ongoing core range of unique products that fit across a broad market – across fashion, art, design and gift.

What are your favourite designers or creatives at the moment that you admire?

I never have one favourite designer, but I’ve always loved the work of Romance was Born, Jenny Kee, Ken Done, Linda Jackson…all Aussie favourites! There’s a bunch of independent designer makers I follow on Instagram too, but there’s too many to name!
